Key Changes to the Canadian Student Permit and How to Apply
Hello everyone, welcome to our blog. I'm Simran, and today we'll discuss the major changes in Canada's study permit requirements for 2024.
Firstly, there's a new requirement for an attestation letter for study permit applications. This is to manage the number of international students. Now, each province must provide this letter for institutions within their region.
This rule started on January 24, 2024. However, if you're in Canada on a visitor visa for a prerequisite program, you don't need this letter for your study permit application. Next, let's talk about work permit eligibility for different types of institutions. Public colleges still offer post-graduate work permits as before. Private colleges never did, and that hasn't changed.
The change is for public-private partnership institutions, which, from September 1, 2024, will no longer offer these permits due to concerns about the quality of education. For spousal permits, only those in master's programs can apply. If you're doing a diploma and get a postgraduate work permit, then you can apply for a spousal permit.
Also, if your master's program is less than two years, you can still get a three-year postgraduate work permit. Lastly, the required proof of funds for living expenses has increased from $10,000 to $20,635 for one year.
As a visitor applying for a study permit, you don't need a GAC. A bank statement covering your living expenses and tuition for one year should suffice. There's been confusion about these new rules, but I hope this clears things up.
